In Iceland, Gunnar is regarded as a national icon and one of the country's leading ambassadors for combat sports. Biography

Gunnar Nelson was born on July 28, 1988, in Akureyri, northern Iceland. Shortly after his birth, his family moved to Reykjavík, where he was raised. His father, Haraldur Dean Nelson (also known as Halli), is of Anglo-American and Icelandic descent. He is the founder and CEO of Mjölnir MMA and has served as Gunnar's manager throughout his entire career. His mother is Guðrún Hulda Gunnarsdóttir Nelson. Gunnar also has a younger sister, María Dögg Nelson (born in 1992), a well-known Icelandic stage and film actress.

During his childhood, Nelson actively participated in traditional sports such as football and ice hockey. His parents strongly supported his physical development and encouraged him to pursue athletic activities.

At the age of 13 (2001), Gunnar began his martial arts journey by training in the traditional Japanese Goju-Ryu (Gōjū-ryū) Karate style. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Gunnar Nelson began training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) in 2006 at the age of 18. Thanks to the coordination, balance, and flexibility he had developed through years of karate training, he progressed exceptionally quickly in BJJ.
