Born in Germany to a German father and an Irish mother, Fassbender is an Irish-German actor, although he was raised entirely in Ireland after his family moved there when he was two years old. After initial success in the movie Hunger, he went on to earn his Hollywood star through appearances in everything from X-Men to Prometheus and 12 Years a Slave, as well as an Oscar nomination or two along the way.

Get to Know Michael Fassbender

Let’s get started by tackling a simple question: where is Michael Fassbender from? That has a simple answer that quickly becomes complicated.

Fassbender’s birthplace is Heidelberg, West Germany, where he was born on April 2nd 1977 to a German father (Josef) and an Irish mother (Adele). He lived there for two years, and then in 1979, his parents moved to Killarney in County Kerry, where he would spend the rest of his childhood.

The official answer for the Fassbender biography, then, is that he was born in Germany and raised in Ireland, which means that he holds dual Irish and German citizenship. After moving to Killarney, he went on to attend St. Brendan’s College, and it should be no surprise that Fassbender has gone on record to say that he thinks of Killarney as home.

With that said, he’s also proud of his German surname, and while he’s typically thought of as an Irish actor, perhaps the best way to describe him is as German-born but Irish-raised.

Is Fassbender an Irishman?

There’s a simple answer to the question of “is Michael Fassbender Irish?”, and that’s that he’s as Irish as Guinness and St. Patrick’s Day. In other words, yes, he’s Irish.

We’ve already covered the question “where is Michael Fassbender from?”, and that’s what really holds the key here. You could argue that he isn’t an Irish actor because he wasn’t born on the Emerald Isle, but that would be missing the point. Legally speaking, he has dual citizenship and so can be considered to be both an Irishman and a German.

Fassbender’s Irish heritage comes from his mother, an Irishwoman called Adele who came from Larne in County Antrim. He grew up in Killarney, County Kerry, and still maintains a strong connection to the country to this day. The Irish Times is a better judge of what makes someone Irish than anyone else, and they’ve described him as a Kerryman, reflecting his upbringing on the island.

Fassbender’s Early Life and Beginnings

Irish-German Roots

Let’s get to grips with Fassbender’s Irish roots and early beginnings by taking a look at his parents. His father, Josef Fassbender, was German, while his mother, Adele, was from County Antrim. After spending the first two years of his life in Germany, the family moved to Killarney, where his parents ran the West End House restaurant and became pillars of the local community.

As a teenager, Fassbender developed an interest in drama, which led to him pursuing a career in the field and signing up for acting school. That took him to the Drama Centre London, a training centre that’s known for both the quality and the intensity of its training programmes. He didn’t actually graduate, leaving before he completed the course, but it provided him with a solid foundation that he’d build on throughout the rest of his career.

Fassbender’s Early Exposure to Theatre and Film

Fassbender’s childhood played a vital role in forming the man he’d later become, in part because his time in County Kerry gave him a strong sense of Irishness and national identity. He grew up surrounded by the stunning landscapes and unique traditions that Ireland is known for, and he also learned what it meant to be part of a close-knit community.

His early interests mostly surrounded the acting that he’d grow up to be known for, and he began performing with local theatre groups and gaining early stage experience at an age when most people are still trying to figure out what they want to do with their lives.

It didn’t take long for Fassbender to outgrow the amateur productions he’d played a part in and to turn his eyes towards London and, eventually, to Hollywood. But even when he did leave his small town behind, County Kerry would continue to be an important part of his DNA.

How His Career Started Out

Fassbender’s First Roles in TV

Before we dive in and take a look at the long list of Michael Fassbender movies, we need to start with the TV roles that defined his early career and gave him the industry experience he’d need to go on and become a superstar.

One of Fassbender’s first but most significant roles came when he played Technical Sergeant Burton “Pat” Christenson in HBO’s Band of Brothers. Even though the role was relatively minor, Band of Brothers was a huge and prestigious production that looked great on his CV and helped him to start gaining recognition in the industry.

After that, he went on to appear in staples of British television like Holby City, Murphy’s Law, Gunpowder, Treason & Plot and Hex. As time went on, the roles became more and more substantial, and yet Fassbender also found time to continue working on stage and improving his skills as he travelled the road towards becoming one of Ireland’s most versatile actors.

Hitting the Big Time with 300

In 2006, the list of Michael Fassbender movies had its biggest addition to date, thanks to his role as Stelios in Zack Snyder’s 300 movie. This historical action film, which was based on a graphic novel and which portrayed the Battle of Thermopylae, saw Fassbender appearing alongside Gerard Butler in his Hollywood breakthrough.

Unlike other Michael Fassbender movies, where most of the preparation involved getting into character and learning his lines, this one called upon him to undertake a physically demanding training regime to get into shape ahead of filming. Fassbender proved himself as more than capable, and the success of the movie opened doors for him and established his potential to be a rising star in the action and historical genres.

300 was a huge success, and it exposed Fassbender to a much larger audience than he’d enjoyed in the past through his TV work. He wasn’t yet a leading man, but he’d shown Hollywood that he had what it took to nail a role.

The Critical Response

Success with Hunger and Shame

The next big addition to the list of Michael Fassbender movies was his starring role in Hunger, which was also the feature film debut of director and future creative partner Steve McQueen. The 2008 movie saw Fassbender playing the role of Bobby Sands, the notorious IRA prisoner who led a 1981 hunger strike and eventually died for the cause he believed in.

As with 300, Fassbender needed to undergo a physical transformation, this time losing a ton of weight to be able to play a man who eventually starved to death. His performance was a masterclass and helped to establish him as a major player in the movie industry, earning him a number of international awards and nominations.

The list of Michael Fassbender movies continues with 2011’s Shame, in which he reunited with McQueen to star in a psychological drama about sex addiction. It was another incredible performance, and one which earned him the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival. It also helped to establish his partnership with McQueen, which would become one of modern British cinema’s most successful collaborations.

Other Critically Acclaimed Performances

By this point, the list of Michael Fassbender movies showed that he was a force to be reckoned with and a major player on the international stage. His critically acclaimed roles in Hunger and Shame showed that he could play complex characters and hold viewers’ attention in slow burners and movies where character work took centre stage.

From there, he went on to play the morally ambiguous character Connor in Fish Tank, followed by starring as psychiatrist Carl Jung in A Dangerous Method. These movies, which came out in 2009 and 2011 respectively, showed that he was a serious actor who was capable of taking on some of the most challenging roles out there.

Other memorable roles from around this time included his appearance as Rochester in 2011’s Jane Eyre, where he was able to put a new spin on an old character, and his supporting role as a lawyer in Ridley Scott’s The Counselor. Perhaps most importantly of all was his appearance as plantation owner Edwin Epps in Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave. Released in 2013, this acting masterclass earned Fassbender an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Blockbuster Movies

Magneto Role in the X-Men Movies

If you recognise Fassbender’s face but you’re not sure why, there are two possibilities. The first is that you’ve seen a ton of Michael Fassbender movies and just not realised who he is. The second is that you’re an X-Men fan and recognise him for playing Erik Lehnsherr. You might be more familiar with Erik under his nickname: Magneto.

The first time the superhero franchise appeared in the list of Michael Fassbender movies was back in 2011, when Fassbender appeared as the younger Magneto and depicted him as a Holocaust survivor. It was an unusually deep and emotional backstory for a character from a superhero movie, and it showed once again how capable Fassbender is of subverting expectations.

The Magneto role ensured that Fassbender would be recognised throughout the world and enabled him to take his pick of future projects. He reprised the role in X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) and Dark Phoenix (2019), but he was also able to balance that with indie productions and arthouse films, giving him the best of both worlds.

Roles in Sci-Fi Franchises and Video Games

For most actors, one iconic role is the best they can hope for. As the list of Michael Fassbender movies shows, he was able to go from one to another, barely skipping a beat along the way. The roles soon started coming in thick and fast, meaning Fassbender likely had to prepare for one role while shooting another.

After taking on the Magneto role, Fassbender’s next move was to appear as the android David in Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, adding sci-fi to his resume and boosting the list of Michael Fassbender movies with another collaboration with a high-profile director. He also reprised the role in Alien: Covenant, allowing him to further develop the character and to showcase his ability to play the morally ambiguous characters that viewers love.

He even embarked on another new genre by taking on the roles of Callum Lynch and his fifteenth-century ancestor Aguilar de Nerha in the Assassin’s Creed movie. The movie itself got mixed reviews, but not because of Fassbender. In fact, aside from the cinematography, it’s Fassbender’s performance that makes the movie worth watching.

Playing Steve Jobs and Earning an Oscar Nomination

As you’ll have noticed from the Michael Fassbender movies we’ve looked at, he’s made something of a name for himself by taking on biographical roles. Whether we’re talking about Bobby Sands in Hunger or Carl Jung in A Dangerous Method, he’s already proved his knack for bringing real people to life in his movies.

That’s why he was a natural choice for the titular role in Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs film, which saw him once again portraying a complicated character and capturing both Jobs’ charisma and his notorious abrasiveness. The performance was so strong that it brought him his second Oscar nomination, this time for Best Actor.

In the same year, 2015, he also appeared in Justin Kurzel’s Macbeth, once again taking on the title role and delivering a masterful performance in an intense piece of historical drama. It was also a nod back to his early days on the stage, and indeed it was likely his first experiences as an actor which shaped the way he approached the role.

His Wife, Alicia Vikander

Michael isn’t the only famous face in his family, because there’s also the Michael Fassbender wife. Alicia Vikander is a Swedish actress, and he married her back in 2017 after they met while working on Derek Cianfrance’s 2016 movie The Light Between Oceans.

The funny thing is that she was almost destined to become the Michael Fassbender wife, because the two of them played a married couple in the movie. From Tom Sherbourne’s wife Isabel in the movie to Michael Fassbender wife Alicia in reality, Vikander landed the role of a lifetime.

Despite the fact that the two of them are well-known media personalities, they’ve kept their private life… well, private. In sharp contrast to most of their contemporaries, the couple rarely discusses their relationship with the media, preferring instead to live their lives in relative peace and quiet. It makes for a refreshing change and will hopefully mean that they’re able to enjoy a long and happy life together.

Movies and Filmography

We’ve already had a look at a few of the main Michael Fassbender movies, but there are plenty more for us to talk about. The man was able to build an incredible career thanks to his confidence and his versatility, as well as the fact that he’s one of the hardest-working men in the industry.

In fact, there are so many Michael Fassbender movies that it’s difficult to provide a full filmography. Instead, we’re going to take a look at a film overview, sharing some of the key films and covering a bit of everything from independent dramas to historical movies, psychological thrillers, sci-fi and Hollywood blockbusters.

Along the way, we’ll cover everything from his early breakthroughs to his iconic roles in Hunger, Shame and 12 Years a Slave, as well as those that won major awards or which he himself has recognised as being of vital importance to his career. And let’s not forget that he’s still making movies today, too!

And so with all of that said, now that we know a little more about which Michael Fassbender movies are out there, let’s take a look at a full list of films. Here’s the Michael Fassbender moviesfilmography (with just the major acting roles listed or we’d be here all day).

Temporary Break and Return to Work

The Supercup Hiatus

After the release of Dark Phoenix in 2019, the list of Michael Fassbender movies was put on pause for a while because he decided to put his personal life first, just like he does with his marriage. In this case, though, it was his love of cars that took centre stage.

During this self-imposed acting break, Fassbender turned to Porsche racing, competing in the Porsche Carrera Cup and doing himself proud by holding his own against the professionals. He took his racing seriously, undergoing an extensive amount of training and gaining a huge amount of experience behind the wheel. His willingness to get stuck in as a newcomer in competitive motor sports showed just how comfortable he was with reinventing himself.

This break also had an impact on his public image. True, he wasn’t in the headlines as much as he was beforehand, but the public eagerly awaited his return to cinema and he definitely earned some cool points through his racing. It also showed that he has multiple aspects to his personality and more skills than just his acting chops.

Fassbender’s Comeback

This takes us up to 2023, when the list of Michael Fassbender movies started to grow again thanks to his comeback appearance in David Fincher’s The Killer. This psychological thriller was another reminder of how good Fassbender is at playing complicated roles, and it’s especially interesting because his character was never named.

The new roles continued with The Agency, a major television series from 2024 that was based on a French spy series with a name that translates to The Bureau of Legends. As a legend himself, it was the perfect job for Fassbender, who played a CIA agent with divided loyalties, another complex character that was reminiscent of some Michael Fassbender movies, despite being shown on the small screen.

Other more recent roles include his appearances as Arló Ó Cairealláin in 2024’s Kneecap and in Steven Soderbergh’s 2025 spy thriller Black Bag, in which he appeared opposite fellow superstar Cate Blanchett. He hit the ground running despite his sabbatical as a race car driver, showing that his talents (and his presence on the silver screen) are here to stay.

Main Achievements and Awards

Michael Fassbender is one of those Irish actors who’s gone from strength to strength and whose career is characterised by the long string of awards that he’s enjoyed from the major players. That makes him reminiscent of actors like Colin Farrell, Pierce Brosnan and Cillian Murphy, and he’s definitely up there amongst the best actors that the country has produced.

In fact, Michael Fassbender has received two Oscar nominations for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, as well as multiple Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations and, of course, the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival for his appearance in Shame. That was one of his earlier accolades, but it hinted at the success that he’d go on to enjoy.

In fact, his illustrious career has so far led to over 60 awards and nominations, and he’s the proud owner of a well-deserved reputation for being one of the greatest actors of his generation. Better yet, for Fassbender fans at least, there will be plenty more movies yet to come.

Fassbender’s Legacy

Michael Fassbender is far from done and so it would be a mistake to think that his legacy will only consist of his accomplishments to date. Like fellow Irishman Cillian Murphy, it seems clear that he’s at the peak of his powers and that his future career will be just as promising as his career so far.

The list of Michael Fassbender movies already includes a number that led to award nominations, including his two Oscar nominations for 12 Years a Slave and Steve Jobs and his BAFTA nomination for Shame. His critical reputation is also underscored by his Volpi Cup Best Actor win for Shame.

There’s a reason why Michael Fassbender is considered to be one of the most interesting actors of his generation, and it all comes down to the movies he’s made and his track record of delivering memorable performances. He’s loved by the industry and the general public alike, and most moviegoers have been blown away by one of his performances whether they realise it or not.
