BIOGRAPHY AND CHILDHOOD
The future footballer was born on 21 July 2000 in Leeds. He is originally from the United Kingdom, but his family later moved to Norway. Erling’s father, Alf-Inge Haaland, also played football. His mother often took her son to the stadium when he was still very young. A love of football was passed down to Erling through his genes. When you grow up in a certain environment, you often take an interest in what you see every day.
When his father’s football career came to an end, Erling was about three years old. The last club of his playing career was ‘Manchester City’. The family moved back to Norway, to Brune.
The young Erling Haaland Brune
Alf-Inge played as a right-back in his youth, and he dreamed that his son would also pursue a career in sport. From 2006, Erling joined the Brune academy. His father became his personal coach and gave him advice. It was his father, in particular, who insisted that Erling be transferred to a team made up of older players. The boy stood out from his teammates by playing as a centre-forward.
Not only Erling’s father, but also his mother had links to sport. Grue Marita Braut is a Norwegian heptathlon champion. Although Erling was born in the United Kingdom, he has Norwegian roots.
In his youth, the subject of this article was interested not only in football, but also in handball, golf and athletics. He made his final choice during his teenage years. It was indeed in football that he enjoyed his greatest successes.

The early days
Haaland’s professional debut came in late spring 2016. He made his debut for ‘Brune’. The footballer took to the pitch for the first time in a match against ‘Ranheim’. His father insisted that he leave the Norwegian league, but no club wanted the young player; it was then that Molde showed an interest in the striker. Erling was still very young and inexperienced, but that did not stop him from securing a place in the team’s starting eleven. His participation in European cup matches helped him achieve his goal: ‘Red Bull Salzburg’ signed the Norwegian. The fact that the Austrians were able to spot talent amongst young strikers and were active in selling players on was no small matter. For the young man, his arrival at the club served as a springboard to a move to a top-flight club.
Note! Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær played a major role in developing the striker’s skills. The footballer still has very fond memories of his mentor to this day.
His breakthrough at Red Bull Salzburg
Erling Braut Haaland settled in Austria and made his debut in the Champions League. That debut was a resounding success; in the first half alone, he managed to score a hat-trick and attract the attention of the big clubs.
The Norwegian’s breakthrough came during the 2019/20 season. Right from his first league match, Haaland scored three goals against the opposition, and he went on to deliver a string of performances of that calibre. What impressed the sporting world most, however, were his performances in the Champions League. No one now had any doubts about the Norwegian’s talent. Haaland looked very much at home on the pitch, and it took him very little time to settle into his new team.
The Borussia Dortmund era
A key milestone in the Norwegian’s career was his move to the Bundesliga, where he achieved superstar status. Almost everyone marvelled at Haaland’s incredible statistics. He scored in almost every match.
Haaland’s move to the Bundesliga took place in December 2019. The Norwegian made a sensational debut. The manager brought him on as a substitute – it was during the match against ‘Augsburg’. Erling scored a hat-trick in his very first match for his new club. It took him just 23 minutes.
In his first season at Borussia, Haaland scored 16 goals in 18 matches. In the 2020/21 season, he was crowned top scorer in the Champions League. The Norwegian scored 10 goals and helped his team-mates win the German Cup.
The 2021/22 season was not an easy one for Haaland, due to injuries. Despite all the difficulties he faced, he managed to score 29 goals in 30 matches.
In total, Haaland played 89 matches for Borussia and scored no fewer than 86 goals.
In 2020, his performances were recognised with the prestigious ‘Golden Boy’ football award. Many top-flight clubs were keen to sign the Norwegian.
TRIUMPH AT MANCHESTER CITY
Erling chose Manchester City. He thus returned to the UK. In his first season with the British club in the Premier League, Haaland scored two goals against West Ham United.
His Champions League debut took place on 6 September 2022. The Norwegian scored twice in the match against Sevilla FC and became the first player in Champions League history to reach 25 goals in 20 matches.
Erling Haaland Manchester City
His transfer to Manchester City took place in 2022. Erling began playing under the guidance of the legendary Josep Guardiola.
Towards the end of 2022, the Norwegian set a record by becoming the fastest player in Premier League history to score 20 goals. The previous record-holder was Kevin Phillips.
On 3 May 2023, Manchester City faced West Ham United, and during that match, Erling set a new Premier League record – this time for the most goals scored in a single season. He scored his 35th goal and surpassed the achievements of Andy Cole and Alan Shearer, who had both scored 34 goals in a season.
In early 2025, Haaland signed a new contract with Manchester City, running until 2034. During the 2025/2026 season, he played 29 matches, scored 22 goals and provided 7 assists.
As a Manchester City player, the Norwegian was crowned Premier League champion twice in the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons, and won the FA Cup and the Community Shield in the 2022/23 and 2024 seasons. He also won the UEFA Champions League (2022/23). Alongside his team-mates, he won the UEFA Super Cup in 2023. Such performances are impressive. It is therefore no surprise that the club’s management chose to extend the contract of this talented Norwegian.

Erling Haaland’s treble with Manchester City
In 2023, Haaland was awarded the Premier League ‘Golden Boot’, the European ‘Golden Boot’ and the ‘Gerd Müller Trophy’ for his goal-scoring exploits.
His status as the undisputed favourite for the Ballon d’Or speaks for itself. The race for this supreme honour has turned into a titanic duel with Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi. In France and across Europe, the burgeoning rivalry between Haaland and the French striker is already seen as the great duel of the new decade, a worthy successor to the Messi-Ronaldo era. Under the guidance of Pep Guardiola, the Norwegian has honed his killer instinct to display surgical precision in every match.

During the 2024/25 Nations League, he helped Norway gain promotion to League A. During that tournament, he scored 7 goals. As the all-time leading goalscorer for the national team, Erling broke the record held by Jørgen Juve, who had scored 33 goals for the senior national team. That record had stood since 1934.

Erling Haaland’s statistics for the Norwegian national team
In early autumn 2025, Haaland set a 21st-century European record: he became the first European player since 1977 to score five goals in a World Cup qualifier. This feat took place on matchday six of the European qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup against Moldova. The match ended 11–1. Haaland scored five goals (a penta-trick) and provided two assists.
Erling became the first Norwegian of the 21st century to score at least four goals in a single match for the senior national team.
Haaland is a leader within the national team. He gets on particularly well with Martin Ødegaard. His aim is to lead Norway to the World Cup and the European Championship. For now, the team is fighting to secure its place in the major tournaments. To date, Haaland has never played in a World Cup.
Note! Haaland also holds another historic record: he scored 9 goals in a single match at the 2019 U20 World Cup against the Honduras Under-20 national football team.
PLAYING STYLE AND PHYSICAL QUALITIES
Erling Haaland’s playing style is characterised by great pace, excellent positioning, powerful shots and an extraordinary eye for goal. He possesses qualities that many young footballers can only dream of.
Haaland has a high top speed, which allows him to outrun most defenders. Among the key characteristics of his playing style are:
- A distinctive running style. At the start of a sprint, Haaland lowers his head, arches his back and shifts his centre of gravity. Thanks to long strides and dynamic movements, the Norwegian maintains his balance.
- Acceleration following feints designed to unsettle the opposition. Haaland calmly heads towards the far post, accelerates and then suddenly changes direction to head towards the near post.
- A quick dribble, which helps his team in many situations, particularly during counter-attacks.

HAALAND’S GREATEST GOALS? | Ten of the best from Erling!
As a centre-forward, Erling Haaland makes effective use of his imposing physique in aerial duels. He often drops deeper down the pitch to collect the ball and help his team build play. Another recurring feature of his game is playing a long pass to a team-mate before turning and charging towards goal.
Inside the penalty area, Haaland makes short but quick runs so that his teammates can easily find him. He uses his body well when playing with his back to goal and controls the ball effectively.
His finishing is also worth highlighting. Haaland has a powerful and accurate shot with both feet, but scores most often with his left foot. His shot is characterised by a sharp curve: the ball quickly gains height and speed, and does not follow a looping trajectory, but rather a straight, upward path.
His long, supple legs influence the range and power of his shot. The flexibility of his knees, combined with good coordination, allows him to adapt quickly to the ball, even after sprints.
Most of his shots come from good positions inside the penalty area; he rarely shoots from distance. Experts believe that his greatest strength lies in a unique eye for goal – his ability to find space, get into advanced positions and pose a threat in the air. According to the player himself, the secret to his effectiveness lies in instinct and simplicity, rather than over-analysing the situation. Sometimes, the situation is simple: a pass behind the defence, a run… and the ball is in the back of the net.
His unique positioning in the penalty area and his ability to capitalise effectively on chances are the main reasons behind his impressive statistics. Haaland is often nicknamed ‘Cyborg’ and ‘Terminator’. These nicknames stem from his height of 195 cm and his imposing muscular build, combined with the speed of a sprinter. Coaches emphasise that he genuinely loves playing football, like a child on a local pitch. This helps him remain mentally strong, even under intense pressure.

Erling Haaland holds a whole host of records, both at club level and for his national team. The player is still relatively young, but his list of achievements is already very impressive. The Norwegian has everything it takes to add to his trophy haul in the years to come, provided injuries do not put a stop to it.
