Early Life and Career Beginnings

The idea of Pierce Brosnan young might seem strange to some, given that he’s been on our screens for over 45 years, but he really was a young man once. Brosnan’s debut as 007 was in the movie GoldenEye, which brought in around $350 million at the box office and revived the franchise after a six-year hiatus. The previous Bond movie, Licence to Kill, made less than half of that and was the second and final Bond film to star Timothy Dalton. 

GoldenEye took old school Bond and modernised it, bringing it into the 21st century because it was five years ahead of its time. It was also the first Bond movie to be filmed and released after the end of the Cold War, with director Martin Campbell ushering in a new era of Bond.

Comedy and Dramatic Roles

Like fellow multitalented Irish actors Colin Farrell and Cillian Murphy, Brosnan has refused to be constrained to just a single genre. In fact, the list of Pierce Brosnan movies includes plenty of comedy and drama to sit alongside the action, with some movies featuring a little bit of both.

Brosnan also lent his voice to animated Christian film The King of Kings and appeared as boxing trainer Brendan Ingle in the movie Giant, while also picking up various producer credits on different projects through his company, Irish DreamTime. 

Personal Life

The personal life of Pierce Brosnan has been tinged with tragedy, although he’s always done a good job of counting his blessings. In 1980, he married Australian actress Cassandra Harris, also adopting her two children, Charlotte and Chris. Sadly, Cassandra died of ovarian cancer in 1991 at the young age of 43, and their daughter Charlotte later died from the same disease in 2013 at the age of 41.

That would have been enough to break most men, but Brosnan channelled his energy into his work and has also been a vocal supporter of cancer research. In 1994, while in Mexico, he met journalist Keely Shaye Smith, and the two of them married in 2001. Together, they have two sons: Dylan Thomas Brosnan (born in 1997) and Paris Beckett Brosnan (born in 2001).

He’s been a UNICEF Ireland ambassador and has worked with the International Fund for Animal Welfare, and he’s also campaigned for greater awareness and further research to combat ovarian cancer in memory of his wife and daughter.

We’re talking about a man who cares so much about philanthropy that he and his second wife, Keely, donated most of the proceeds from their wedding coverage to help a school in Tibet. Closer to their home in Hawaii, they donated $100,000 for playground equipment at a local school.

Ultimately, Pierce Brosnan is a true legend and a man who’ll be remembered at the same level as modern stars like Ryan Reynolds and Timothy Chalamet. He was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame back in December 1997, and he’s still starring in new movies today, nearly thirty years later. 

When future generations look back, Brosnan will be recognised as the Bond icon who bridged the classic and modern eras and who showed the rare ability to combine action, drama, comedy and musicals in a career that any actor would be jealous of.

A true symbol of success and a man who put Irish cinema on the map and drew the attention of Hollywood to the Emerald Isle, he’s an inspiration for a new generation of Irish actors and a legend in his own lifetime.
