Boomtown is not just a music festival, but an entire fictional city with its own history, characters and dozens of themed neighbourhoods – a city that has come to life. Every year, for a few days, a field near Winchester is transformed into a vast theatrical stage, where music, street performances and interactive shows all become part of a single narrative. Thanks to this format, the Boomtown Festival has long since moved beyond the scope of a conventional open-air event and is regarded as one of the most unusual events in British festival culture. In this article, we’ll explain what the Boomtown Fair is all about, where it takes place, and how it differs from other major music events in Great Britain.

What is the Boomtown Festival?

Boomtown (or Boomtown Fair) is an annual music festival held on the Matterley Estate, a short distance from Winchester in the county of Hampshire. It was first held in 2009, and since 2011 has been held at its current venue within the South Downs National Park.

The main feature of Boomtown is its combination of music and theatre. The organisers create a fully-fledged fictional town, divided into themed districts. Each district has its own architecture, actors, storyline and music programme. Visitors become not just concert-goers, but full participants in a large-scale interactive performance.

Despite the theatrical concept, music remains at the heart of the festival. Artists spanning a wide range of genres perform on dozens of stages – from drum and bass, dub, reggae and ska, rock, hip-hop and house to techno and folk. Over the course of five days, hundreds of concerts, DJ sets, shows and performances take place.

Boomtown is sometimes referred to as the Winchester Festival. Other names mentioned include the Boom Town Festival and even the Winchester Music Festival, as the venue is located just a few kilometres from the town of Winchester.

In terms of scale and diversity, the programme of the Boomtown Festival is most often compared to the Glastonbury Festival. Both events attract tens of thousands of attendees, and their line-ups feature artists from a variety of genres. The organisers place great emphasis on the arts beyond the music stage. The difference is that Glastonbury focuses on world-class headliners and a vast musical programme, whereas Boomtown is built around a single artistic concept, where every street and stage becomes part of a vast fictional world.

Where does Boomtown take place?

The Boomtown Festival takes place on the Matterley Estate – a large private estate in Hampshire, approximately 5 kilometres south-east of Winchester. The site is situated within the South Downs National Park and consists of a natural valley with rolling hills, which means that many of the stages are set within a natural amphitheatre. This is one of the reasons why the festival looks so unique and creates the impression of a real town built into the landscape.

The organisers do not publish the festival’s official address in advance. Ticket holders receive detailed directions shortly before the event begins. The postcode SO21 1HW is used for sat-navs, though the organisers recommend following road signs rather than GPS once you arrive in the area, as the entry points vary depending on the type of parking and ticket category.

The Boomtown site covers several hundred hectares – it’s not easy to find your way around without a map. Every year, the organisers slightly alter the layout of the stages, campsites and themed areas, so the latest map is published shortly before the festival opens. It is available on the official mobile app and on the Boomtown website.

The main music stages and themed city quarters are usually located in the centre of the festival site. Surrounding these are campsites, food courts, retail outlets, first-aid posts, information centres and car parks. There are footpaths connecting the different areas, but due to the hilly terrain, visitors have to walk a lot – the organisers advise wearing comfortable footwear.

Boomtown 2026 Line Up

The Boomtown 2026 Festival will take place from 12 to 16 August. The organisers have once again put together dozens of stages, hundreds of performances and themed city districts, each with its own unique atmosphere. The full line-up features several hundred acts, but the main headliners will be:

• Skrillex.
• Kneecap.
• Scissor Sisters.
• Madness.
• Four Tet.
• Scooter.
• Ashnikko.
• Shaggy.
• Floating Points.
• Groove Armad.
• Faithless and many others.

Among the headliners from previous editions of the festival, the famous band Nova Twins are particularly worth mentioning. Boomtown’s regulars are also very much hoping to see The Prodigy on one of its stages at future editions.

Information for visitors

Before travelling to Boomtown, it’s worth planning your route in advance, choosing your ticket type and preparing for life in the tent camp. The festival takes place over five days away from urban amenities, so the organisers recommend that you familiarise yourself in advance with the visitor rules, the site map and the list of permitted items.

Tickets

The price of tickets for Boomtown 2026 depends on your arrival and departure dates. The organisers offer standard tickets and Public Transport Tickets – these are slightly cheaper and are intended for those travelling by train or bus.

The following are charged separately:

2. Campervan pass – from £110.
3. Upgraded accommodation options – from £740.

What to wear to the festival?

The weather in Hampshire in August can be very changeable. During the day, temperatures can exceed 25 degrees, whilst at night they can drop to between 10 and 12 degrees. It’s important to bear in mind that after rain, many paths quickly turn to mud. It’s best to bring:

• waterproof boots or wellies;
• light clothing for the day and a warm jumper for the evening;
• a raincoat or waterproof jacket;
• a hat and sun cream;
• a comfortable rucksack for walking around the site.

Many guests come dressed in colourful costumes to match the atmosphere of the fictional town of Boomtown, but this is not compulsory.

Dates and start times

Boomtown 2026 will take place from 12 to 16 August 2026:

1. Wednesday, 12 August – campsite opens for Wednesday Entry ticket holders.
2. Thursday 13 August – start of the main programme and admission for Thursday Entry ticket holders.
3. Sunday 16 August – the final day of the festival and closing ceremony following the final performances.

Camping

The festival has its own campsite. Visitors can pitch their own tent in one of the official camping areas – this is included in the price of the main ticket categories. For those seeking greater comfort, paid accommodation options are available, including fully equipped tents and special camping areas.

The site has showers, toilets, drinking water points and food and drink outlets. The festival is designed for self-catering accommodation over several days.

How to get there?

The organisers offer several ways to reach the festival site.

• By train. The nearest railway station is Winchester. During the festival, official shuttle buses run regularly from there to the entrance.
• By coach. National Express operates direct services to the festival site. Transfers are available from more than 50 towns and cities across Great Britain.
• By car. You can drive there via the M3 and A31 motorways. Please follow the temporary festival road signs.
• By bike. Bicycle parking spaces are provided. The festival organisers support eco-friendly modes of transport.

Parking

Separate car parks are provided near the festival site, but you must purchase a parking pass in advance. The organisers recommend using public transport where possible or travelling together in one car to reduce traffic congestion and cut emissions.

An interesting feature of Boomtown is that £1 from every parking pass sold goes towards funding renewable energy projects. It’s usually a walk from the car park to the festival entrance, so it’s worth bearing the weight of your luggage in mind and using trolleys to carry your belongings.
