Who are Kings of Leon?

The band was formed in Nashville, Tennessee, USA. Its founders are three brothers: Caleb (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), Jared (bass guitarist, backing vocalist, also plays the synthesizer) and Nathan (drummer, backing vocalist) Fallowill. Their cousin Matthew Fallowill (lead guitarist and backing vocalist) helped them to realise this project.

The band members named the group in honour of their father and grandfather, who were both named Leon.

When was Kings of Leon formed?

The band's history began in 1999. Several decades have passed since its creation. During this time, the band has released many hit songs and several albums.

The talent and success of Kings of Leon are confirmed by the numerous awards received by the band.

The band's first significant achievement was the Brit Award for International Breakthrough of the Year, received at the dawn of their creative activity in 2004.

This was followed in 2009 by a win in the Best International Album category (Only by the Night).

In the same year, they were nominated for Best International Group.

In 2011, Kings of Leon's album Kings of Leon was nominated for Best International Album.

They were also nominated for Best International Group in 2014 and 2017.

The band has been nominated several times for the most prestigious award in the music world, the Grammy Awards, in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2022. The band has won four times in the categories Best Rock Performance, Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Rock Song.

In addition, the band has been nominated many times for the MTV Europe Music Awards.

In 2010, it was recognised as the best foreign music group in Sweden by the GAFFA Awards (the award has been presented since 2010). Kings of Leon also won in the Best Foreign Album category.

Kings of Leon at festivals

Kings of Leon are actively invited to participate in major music festivals.

In 2008, Kings of Leon headlined a large-scale music festival in Glastonbury.

Caleb Followill

One of the founders of Kings of Leon. He is the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the band. Caleb's vocals are characterised by a raw, slightly hoarse tone, which gives the music a special sincerity and tension- this has become one of the band's trademarks. Caleb Followill recently broke a bone in his heel in a "freak" accident.

Jared Followill

Bass guitarist, keyboardist and backing vocalist. He was born on 20 November 1986 in Tennessee, USA. He is the brother of Kings of Leon lead singer Caleb Followill and drummer Nathan Followill, and cousin of lead guitarist Matthew Followill. Jared joined the band at a very young age, at fifteen. Several musicians influenced his development as a creative personality, including Peter Hook from Joy Division and New Order, Kim Dil from The Pixies, and Nikolai Freiche from The Strokes. In 2012, the artist married Martha Fallowill, and on 21 January 2020, they had a daughter, Adeline James.

Matthew Followill

Lead guitarist, keyboardist, backing vocalist. One of the founders of Kings of Leon, born on 10 September 1984 in Oklahoma, USA. Together with the band, he worked on the albums Only By the Night (2008) and Come Around Sundown (2010). Matthew Followill is not only passionate about music, he also tries his hand at acting and composing. He can be seen in the films I Am the Fourth (2011), Monstro (2008), and Paranoia (2007).

Nathan Followill

Drummer and backing vocalist, born on 26 June 1979 in Oklahoma, USA. On 14 November 2009, the musician married Jessie Bailyn, and the couple have two children. Together with the band, Nathan Followill has recorded several albums and songs that have achieved hit status.

Aha Shake Heartbreak, for example, is Kings of Leon's second studio album. It was released in late autumn 2004 in the United Kingdom and a little later in February 2005 in the USA. This album is unique in that it is the only one in the band's discography to have been given a ‘parental guidance’ rating. Its cover is similar to the cover of Queen's album A Night at the Opera. The original version for Great Britain and Ireland was released with a black cover and an orchid image, while the later version, intended for the American public, had a white background and a different type of orchid.

The cover of Mechanical Bull appears in the 2021 computer game Life Is Strange: True Colors, in which the characters listen to the song ‘Don't Matter.’

Kings of Leon fans are eagerly awaiting the band's performances in Nottingham, Glasgow and other cities. Concerts are rarely cancelled and only for valid reasons. The band is very popular, almost always filling stadiums to capacity, with Kings of Leon fans donning T-shirts bearing the band members' images.
