The History of Faithless

The history of Faithless began in London in 1995. The band was founded by Maxi Jazz, Sister Bliss and Rollo. Their debut album, Reverence, released in 1996, brought them international fame. The track ‘Insomnia’ proved particularly successful, subsequently becoming Faithless’s signature song.

In 1998, the album Sunday 8PM was released, featuring the track ‘God Is a DJ’. The release cemented the band’s success and earned them a Mercury Prize nomination.

Success in the 2000s

In 2001, Faithless released Outrospective. The album featured ‘We Come 1’ and ‘One Step Too Far’, recorded in collaboration with Dido. During this period, the band toured extensively and performed at major festivals, including the Glastonbury Festival (2002 and 2010).

Their subsequent albums – No Roots, released in 2004, To All New Arrivals, released in 2006, and The Dance, released in 2010 – continued Faithless’s successful career. In 2011, the band announced they were disbanding.

A comeback and a new chapter

In 2015, Faithless returned to the stage, and in 2020 they released the album All Blessed. Following the death of Maxi Jazz in December 2022, Sister Bliss and Rollo decided to continue working on the project.

In 2025, the album Champion Sound was released – Faithless’s eighth studio album. The band continues to perform and release new music, retaining their distinctive electronic sound.

Over the course of nearly three decades, Faithless’s history has been linked not only to its two current members – Sister Bliss and Rollo – but also to musicians who have significantly influenced the band’s sound. Over the years, Faithless has featured various vocalists, a guitarist, a bassist and a percussionist.

Sister Bliss

Sister Bliss

Sister Bliss is the stage name of Ayalah Deborah Bentovim, a British keyboardist, DJ, producer and songwriter. She co-founded Faithless with Rollo, Maxi Jazz and Jamie Catto in 1995 and became the band’s lead performer on stage: she played keyboards and synthesisers, was responsible for programming, and was also involved in production and arrangements. Sister Bliss’s musical talents extend far beyond the usual repertoire of the electronic music scene: she also plays the piano, violin, saxophone and bass guitar. Together with Rollo, she has also worked on remixes, for example, for Moby. Following Faithless’s first split in 2011, Sister Bliss pursued solo projects, and has been performing with the band again since 2015.

Rollo

Rollo

Rollo is the stage name of Rowland Constantine O’Malley Armstrong, a British producer and DJ who preferred working in the studio to performing on stage. His role in Faithless is somewhat unusual: he is considered one of the founders and current members of the band, but has never performed live with Faithless. Rollo is responsible for production, programming, arrangements and a significant portion of the studio work. Even before Faithless came into being, Rowland Constantine O’Malley Armstrong founded Cheeky Records, and later produced albums by his sister Dido, including No Angel, Life for Rent and Safe Trip Home. Other artists he has worked with include the Pet Shop Boys, U2, Moby, Simply Red and Rob Dougan. In 2019, Rollo began releasing music under the name R Plus.

Over the course of their career, Faithless have performed both at major British arenas and at festivals where electronic music shares the stage with rock, pop and hip-hop. The band has a track record of performing at renowned venues. In recent years, Faithless have once again been appearing regularly on major festival stages. Some of these performances have already taken place, whilst others are scheduled for 2026.

The Brixton Academy has become one of Faithless’s key London venues. On 10 April 1999, the band performed there during their tour in support of Sunday 8PM. Faithless later returned to this venue on several occasions in 2001 and 2002.

Another notable London performance was the concert at Wembley Arena, which took place on 23 March 2002. It was part of Faithless’s UK tour, which began in March and included concerts in Wolverhampton, Glasgow, Doncaster, Plymouth, Blackpool and Newport.

The band’s festival history is also quite extensive. At the Isle of Wight Festival, Faithless performed on 10 June 2005 at Seaclose Park.
