History and description of the museum

The history of the Moco Museum began not in London, but in Amsterdam. The first museum opened in 2016, and a branch opened in Barcelona in 2021. The London venue became the chain’s third project and the first Moco venue in the United Kingdom. It opened on 10 August 2024 in the Marble Arch area.

The founders of Moco are former gallery owners Kim Logchies Prins and Lionel Logchies. Their idea was to make contemporary art less exclusive and formal. From the outset, the museum aimed to attract not only the usual art gallery-goers, but also people who come specifically to see a particular artist, a photograph or an unusual installation.

The museum occupies three floors with a total area of around 25,000 square feet (approximately 2,323 square metres). Inside, there are exhibition spaces, the Moco Store and areas featuring digital and immersive works. The façade of the Moco Museum London is easily recognisable by its pink sign, which contrasts with the historic architecture of the building. The museum itself uses this entrance as one of the key visual features of its London site.

However, Moco cannot be described as a state museum in the traditional sense. It is an independent, commercial institution with an admission charge. Its concept centres on contemporary art, street art, digital projects and works by artists who have had a significant influence on popular culture.

The museum’s collection

The Moco Museum London’s collection comprises over 100 works. Artists featured include Banksy, Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Yayoi Kusama, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, KAWS, Takashi Murakami, Daniel Arsham, Tracey Emin and others. Digital and immersive exhibitions occupy a special place.

One of the museum’s key features is the juxtaposition of established artists alongside newer talents. Visitors can view works related to pop art, street art and contemporary art, before moving on to an area featuring digital projections.

Banksy is a particular highlight. Moco exhibits original works by Banksy and states that they have been verified as genuine. Among the works on display, the museum highlights "Girl with Balloon" and "Flower Thrower".

The Moco Museum London also exhibits works by Andy Warhol, Basquiat, Haring, Kusama, Hirst and other renowned artists. The permanent collection is complemented by temporary exhibitions. This enables the museum to introduce visitors to new, high-profile names in digital art and cutting-edge contemporary artists, encouraging people to return time and again.

The museum also features works by Robbie Williams, who is not just a musician. In this exhibition, he is presented as a visual artist in his own right, separate from his musical career, and original works of art created by him over the decades are on display.

Digital and immersive art form an important part of the concept. A visit to Moco is more like a sequence of different art spaces than a traditional stroll through galleries filled with paintings.

Reviews

Moco Museum London has a rating of approximately 4.7 out of 5 on TripAdvisor, based on over 1,200 reviews. The museum has also been awarded the Travellers’ Choice 2026.

Visitors highlight the diversity of the collection, works by Banksy, Keith Haring and Andy Warhol, the digital installations and the convenient location near Marble Arch. Many note that one to one and a half hours is sufficient to see the museum, although the official website recommends allowing up to two hours.

There are also some criticisms in the reviews. Some visitors find certain sections of the collection rather small. There are also mentions of temporary issues with the facilities.

Your experience of the Moco Museum largely depends on your expectations: it is more of a contemporary museum space with an emphasis on the visual experience than a traditional art gallery.

Anna:

The Moco Museum London left a pleasant impression. I particularly enjoyed the works by Banksy and the digital installations. The museum isn’t too big, so we were able to take our time looking round the exhibition in about an hour and a half. I also liked the location: after visiting the museum, you can go straight for a stroll in Hyde Park. On the downside, some of the galleries were quite crowded, so we had to queue to take photos of the popular pieces. Overall, it’s an interesting place, especially if you’re into contemporary art and unusual exhibition spaces.
