Stephen Graham is an English actor, producer and screenwriter, known for films and TV series such as "Snatch", "Gangs of New York", "This Is England", "Boardwalk Empire", "The Irishman", "Boiling Point", "Peaky Blinders" and others. Biography

Stephen Graham was born on 3 August 1973 in Kirkby, Lancashire. His full name is Stephen Graham Kelly. He grew up in a working-class family, developed an interest in acting at an early age, and began performing on stage whilst still a child. Subsequently, his studies at Rose Bruford College led him to a professional acting career, and meeting Hannah Walters became an important part not only of his personal life but also of his subsequent work in film.

Education

As a child, Stephen attended Overdale Primary School. His performances on the school stage made him seriously consider a career in acting. When Stephen was around eight years old, a local actor, Andrew Schofield, saw him in a production of Treasure Island, in which the boy played Jim Hawkins, and advised him to continue studying acting.

After leaving Overdale Primary School, he went on to study at Ruffwood School. At the age of 14, Graham became involved with Liverpool’s Everyman Theatre. There, he had the opportunity to try his hand at acting in a professional theatre environment, and later took part in touring productions to other cities, including the Edinburgh Festival. In his youth, he also practised breakdancing and was a member of The Bronx Breakers.

Stephen later enrolled at Rose Bruford College of Theatre & Performance in London. It was at this institution that he received professional acting training and met his future wife, Hannah Walters. During his studies, Graham explored various acting techniques, including the Stanislavski and Uta Hagen methods.

Parents

Stephen Graham’s family was of mixed heritage. His biological father, Stephen Kelly, had Jamaican roots. Stephen’s paternal grandmother was Swedish.

The actor’s mother, Mary Kelly, is British. Graham himself has spoken about how, as a child, he found it difficult to come to terms with his mixed appearance: he had fair skin, whilst his brothers were considerably darker.

Stephen’s parents separated when he was a child. After that, he was brought up by his mother and stepfather, Mike Fazakerley. His mother worked as a social worker, whilst his stepfather was initially a mechanic before moving into paediatrics, where he worked as a nurse. Graham himself has repeatedly emphasised that it was his stepfather who played a major role in his upbringing and helped him to accept his mixed heritage.

At the same time, he did not sever ties with his biological father, Stephen. Although his father did not raise him full-time, Graham maintained contact with him. His father later said that he was proud of his son’s achievements and his acting career.

In 2022, the actor’s mother passed away.

Brothers

Stephen Graham has younger brothers:

Aston Kelly – Stephen’s younger brother, who has also chosen a career as a professional actor. He is building his career mainly in British television.

Nathan Fazakerley – Stephen’s half-brother on his mother’s side. One of the actor’s most significant childhood stories is linked to him. As the family was of mixed heritage, Nathan had much darker skin than Stephen. The actor recalled that their stepfather always taught them to stick together and protect one another from racism on the streets. When Nathan was born, Stephen had just left to study acting in London.

In March 2026, Stephen Graham attended the Mobo Awards ceremony alongside his stepfather, his half-brother and his teenage son.

Personal life

Despite his high-profile profession, Stephen Graham tries not to let his family life become part of his professional career. Together with Hannah Walters, he has been raising their two children – Grace and Alfie. The family occasionally appears together at premieres and award ceremonies.

Wife

Stephen Graham’s wife is the English actress and producer Hannah Walters. They met whilst both were studying at Rose Bruford College of Theatre & Performance. They soon began a relationship and married in 2008.

Hannah Walters has built a career in film and television. She has starred alongside her husband in several projects, including "This Is England", "The Virtues", "Time", "Boiling Point" and "Adolescence".

In 2020, the couple founded their own production company, Matriarch Productions.

For Graham, Hannah is not only his wife and colleague, but also the person he has repeatedly thanked for her support. During his acceptance speech at the Primetime Emmy Awards in 2025, the actor described her as his rock. He said:

You are my rock, you are my world, you are my soulmate. And you know and I know, without you I would be dead. From the bottom of my heart I love you with everything I have.

The family leads a fairly private life. In an interview, Graham explained that after moving from London, they settled in the countryside of Leicestershire, in Ibstock. The actor emphasised, however, that their family life bears little resemblance to that of Hollywood: they might go to the cinema or out for dinner together, but they spend most of their time at home.

Stephen Graham has dyslexia (a reading disorder), so his wife reads the scripts to him.

Children

Stephen Graham and Hannah Walters have two children – a daughter, Grace Graham, and a son, Alfie Graham. Grace was born in 2005 and Alfie in 2007.

The actor’s eldest daughter has appeared alongside her father at major ceremonies on several occasions. She has shown an interest in film. In a 2022 interview, Graham explained that his daughter had studied "This Is England" in her film studies class and, after watching it, told her father that she considered it one of the best works of his career. The family also watched "Peaky Blinders", and, according to the actor, it was his children who supported his decision to accept the role of Hayden Stagg.

Alfie Graham is the youngest child in the family. In 2025, he began trying his hand at modelling: in December of that year, he posted photos from his first professional shoot. Alfie also regularly appears in his father’s TikTok videos.

In 2023, the whole family appeared on the British version of Gogglebox. And in 2025, Alfie and Grace, along with their parents, attended events related to the Primetime Emmy Awards.

Stephen Graham began his professional acting career in 1990. In his early years, he took on minor roles in British films and television series. He came to wider public attention following the release of projects such as "Snatch" in 2000, "Band of Brothers" in 2001 and "Gangs of New York" in 2002.

His real breakthrough came with the 2006 film "This Is England", in which Graham played the aggressive skinhead Andrew ‘Combo’ Gascoigne. He later reprised this role in the series "This Is England ’86", "This Is England ’88" and "This Is England ’90".

Graham is also known for his film roles in "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy", "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides", "The Irishman", "Rocketman", "Venom: Let There Be Carnage" and "Venom: The Last Dance". In 2020, Graham co-founded Matriarch Productions with Hannah Walters. The company was involved in the production of "Boiling Point" – in which the actor played chef Andy Jones.

A new phase in the actor’s career began with the release of "Adolescence" in 2025. Graham was one of the series’ creators, co-wrote the screenplay with Jack Thorne, served as an executive producer and played Eddie Miller. In 2026, Graham reprised his role as Hayden Stagg in "Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man".

Awards and recognition

Throughout his career, Stephen Graham has received numerous BAFTA nominations. In 2022, he was nominated for a BAFTA Film Award in the Leading Actor category for his role as Andy Jones in "Boiling Point". In the same year, Graham was nominated for a BAFTA Television Award for his leading role in "Help".

Graham’s big breakthrough came following the release of "Adolescence". In 2026, he won a BAFTA Television Award in the Leading Actor category, whilst the series itself won in the Limited Drama category. This was Graham’s first BAFTA win.

"Adolescence" also earned the actor three Primetime Emmy Awards. Graham received awards in three categories:

• As the series’ executive producer.

In total, "Adolescence" received 13 nominations and won eight Emmys.
