Biography of Adam Ant

Adam Ant was born on 3 November 1954 in the Marylebone area of London. The musician’s real name is Stuart Leslie Goddard. On stage, he is known as Adam Ant – an artist with a unique style and image.

Early Life

Stuart Goddard spent his childhood in London. The family lived quite modestly: their home consisted of just two rooms in the De Walden Buildings in the St John’s Wood area. Adam Ant himself later recalled that he grew up without much luxury, but there was always food on the table.

His family has an interesting background. On his mother’s side, Stuart is of Romani descent: his maternal grandfather, Walter Albany Smith, was a Romanichal. Later, this part of his family history became significant to Adam Ant himself and was reflected in his interest in issues affecting oppressed and marginalised groups.

At school, the future musician was quite active and far from being the quietest pupil. He first attended Robinsfield Infants School, and then Barrow Hill Junior School. There, Stuart took up boxing and played cricket.

He later enrolled at St Marylebone Grammar School – a boys’ grammar school. Of all his subjects, history fascinated him the most. He also played rugby and even became a school prefect. He did well at school, particularly in history, English and art.

After school, Stuart enrolled at Hornsey College of Art. He chose graphic design and studied for a while under the art historian Peter Webb, but he did not manage to complete his degree. Ant gave up his studies to focus on music.

His interest in art, which had emerged in his youth, never faded. It became one of the key elements of Adam Ant’s stage persona: his music has always been closely linked to his clothing, make-up, historical motifs and visual presentation.

Family

Stuart Leslie Goddard was the only child of Leslie Alfred Goddard and Betty Kathleen Smith. His father had previously served in the Royal Air Force and later worked as a chauffeur. His mother, Betty Kathleen Smith, worked as an embroiderer for the designer Norman Hartnell. Following his parents’ divorce, which took place when Stuart was seven years old, it was his mother who took charge of his upbringing and provided for the family.

Adam Ant’s biography includes an interesting story involving Paul McCartney. After the divorce, Betty took a job as a cleaner and, for a time, worked cleaning the home of the famous artist.

Adam and the Ants

Before forming his own band, Adam Ant played bass guitar in Bazooka Joe. The first line-up of Adam and the Ants emerged in 1977. That same year, Adam Ant appeared in the film ‘Jubilee’, and the band’s songs featured on its soundtrack.

The band’s first album, Dirk Wears White Sox, was released in 1979, but their real breakthrough came after the line-up was revamped. Guitarist Marco Pirroni joined Adam Ant, and the band’s distinctive sound was shaped by two drum kits and an unusual blend of post-punk, new wave and rhythms inspired by African music.

In November 1980, Kings of the Wild Frontier was released. The album reached number one in the UK charts and became the best-selling record in Great Britain in 1981. It featured the tracks ‘Kings of the Wild Frontier’, ‘Dog Eat Dog’ and ‘Antmusic’.

Their next album, Prince Charming, was released in November 1981 and gave the band two number-one singles in Great Britain – ‘Stand and Deliver’ and ‘Prince Charming’. In early 1982, Adam and the Ants split up.

The band’s success was recognised at the Brit Awards: in 1982, Kings of the Wild Frontier won the award for Best British Album.

Solo career

Following the break-up of Adam and the Ants, Adam Ant launched his solo career almost immediately. In October 1982, his first solo album, Friend or Foe, was released, reaching number five in the UK Albums Chart. The album’s biggest hit was the song ‘Goody Two Shoes’, which topped the UK singles chart.

In 1983, ‘Strip’ was released, followed by ‘Vive Le Rock’ in 1985. Adam Ant’s sound evolved over time: the 1990 album Manners & Physique showed a noticeable influence of the Minneapolis sound. The song ‘Room at the Top’ became another hit.

In 1995, Wonderful was released. This was followed by a long hiatus from releasing studio albums. Adam Ant was able to return to active musical work in the 2010s. In 2013, he released Adam Ant Is the Blueblack Hussar in Marrying the Gunner’s Daughter, which reached number 25 in the UK charts.

In the years that followed, Adam Ant toured extensively. He undertook themed tours dedicated to specific albums, including Kings of the Wild Frontier, Friend or Foe and Dirk Wears White Sox. In 2025, the Antmusic 2025 UK tour, which had been postponed from 2024, took place.

In 2008, Adam Ant also spoke of his desire to work with the Kaiser Chiefs. However, the artists have yet to release a full-length collaborative recording. The song may feature on Adam Ant’s new album.

Concerts and festivals

Following his return to active performing, Adam Ant once again began appearing regularly at British festivals. One of his most notable appearances was at Camp Bestival – on 27 July 2012, he performed on the festival’s main stage. Adam Ant took to the stage dressed as the Dandy Highwayman.

In 2016, Adam Ant was part of the line-up for the Isle of Wight Festival, which celebrated the 40th anniversary of the punk movement. The festival took place from 9 to 12 June.

On 24 October 2025, Adam Ant performed at the Utilita Arena Cardiff. The show took place as part of the artist’s Antmusic 2025 tour

On 10 November 2025, the musician took to the stage at the Bristol Beacon. The following day, 11 November 2025, Adam Ant performed at the Watford Colosseum in Watford.

During his career, Adam Ant released three studio albums with Adam and the Ants and six solo studio albums. Persuasion (1991/1992) was recorded but never officially released.

Adam Ant’s personal life

Adam Ant’s personal life was no less eventful than his musical career. He was married twice, dated famous actresses and became a father in the late 1990s. In recent years, however, the musician has preferred to keep his personal relationships out of the public eye.

Partner

Adam Ant’s first wife was Carol Mills, whom he met whilst studying at Hornsey College of Art. They married in 1975 whilst still students. The marriage was short-lived: the couple divorced in 1977.

Following the divorce, Adam Ant had relationships with several well-known women. Among them were the actress Amanda Donohoe, whom he dated from 1977 to 1981, and Jamie Lee Curtis – they were a couple in 1983. In the early 1990s, he was rumoured to be in a relationship with Heather Graham.

The musician’s second wife was Lorraine Gibson. They married on 27 June 1997 in Dayton, Tennessee. Lorraine worked as a PR assistant for Vivienne Westwood and was considerably younger than Adam Ant. In 1998, the couple had a daughter, Lily. The marriage soon began to fall apart, and in 2002 the couple divorced.
