Harry Kane

Harry Kane is an English footballer, a striker for the German club Bayern Munich and captain of the England national team. Over the course of his career, he has gone from playing for the Ridgeway Rovers youth team to becoming one of his country’s leading strikers.

Biography

Harry Edward Kane was born on 28 July 1993 at Whipps Cross University Hospital in Leytonstone. His family initially lived in Walthamstow, before moving to Chingford, where the future footballer spent much of his childhood.

Sport came into Kane’s life very early on. At the age of just five, Harry wrote the following for a school project:

I could crawl / I could cry / I can swim / I want to play football.

Education

As a child, Harry Kane attended Larkswood Primary Academy until 2004. He then went on to study at Chingford Foundation School. This school is also known for having been attended by David Beckham.

Interestingly, David Beckham not only attended the same school but also visited it in 2005, when Kane was 11 years old. A famous historical photograph survives, showing a young Harry Kane standing next to Beckham and a girl named Katie Goodland (who later became Kane’s wife).

Kane’s school years were closely intertwined with football. At the age of six, he began playing for Ridgeway Rovers, and by the age of eight he had joined the Arsenal academy. After a brief spell in the club’s system, he returned to his local team, before continuing his football training at Watford and Tottenham Hotspur.

At Tottenham, Kane was not initially seen as a future striker. He played in midfield, and the coaches gradually changed his role on the pitch. In his youth, Kane did not stand out for his physical strength or speed, but he constantly worked on his technique and other aspects of his game. Over time, he underwent a noticeable physical transformation, after which Kane became taller and stronger. Alongside his regular training sessions, he undertook intensive football training at several academies, gradually establishing his position on the pitch.

Parents

Harry Kane’s parents are Kim Kane (née Hogg) and Patrick Kane. The footballer was born in London, whilst his father is of Irish descent, having been born in Galway. Thanks to his father, Kane was eligible to represent the Republic of Ireland at international level, but he chose to play for England instead, eventually becoming captain of the national team.

Harry has spoken on numerous occasions about his family’s influence on his passion for football. According to the footballer, his sporting ability may have come from his mother’s side. He has said that his maternal grandfather, Eric Hogg, also played football to a fairly high standard. That said, there were light-hearted debates within the Kane family about exactly who the future footballer had inherited his sporting talents from:

I think the sporting genes come from my Mum’s side of the family, although the topic is a hot debate in the Kane household. Dad probably won’t like me saying that, but I think my grandad Eric on my Mum’s side was quite a good footballer and played at a decent level.

Harry Kane’s parents, Kim and Patrick, are his most ardent supporters. They regularly attend his most important matches and official ceremonies.

Brother

Harry Kane has an older brother, Charlie Kane. They grew up together in London. According to Harry, he spent a lot of time playing football with his brother and father.

Charlie later became Harry’s business partner. He has been acting as Harry’s agent since 2018, managing his business and commercial interests. Charlie oversees Harry Kane’s projects, including his business ventures and charitable work.

Harry Kane himself has repeatedly emphasised the importance of family in the success of his sporting career. In his case, the support of his loved ones began long before his first matches for Tottenham and England. It was in London that he took his first steps in football, and throughout his professional career, his brother Charlie has remained by his side, albeit in a different role – not as a training partner, but as his representative and assistant in business matters.

Personal life

In 2023, following his move to Bayern Munich, Harry moved to Germany with his wife and children. Kane describes his move to Bayern Munich as an important chapter not only in his professional life, but also in his personal life.

Harry himself has repeatedly emphasised that moving abroad helped him and his loved ones to step out of their "comfort zone", experience a new culture and grow even closer. For example, it has become a tradition for the family to attend Munich’s famous Oktoberfest dressed in traditional Bavarian attire.

Wife

Harry Kane met his future wife, Katie Goodland, when they were children. They went to school together and remained close for many years, until Kane’s career gradually reached the international stage. In one interview, the footballer explained that Katie had, in fact, witnessed his entire journey from youth football to playing for Tottenham Hotspur and England.

In 2017, Kane proposed to his partner, and in June 2019, the couple got married.

The family tries to avoid undue media attention. At the same time, Harry and Katie work together on charitable projects through the Harry Kane Foundation (HKF), which was established in 2022. Harry Kane and Katie Goodland have four children: two daughters and two sons. Their eldest daughter, Ivy Jane Kane, was born in January 2017. In August 2018, their second daughter, Vivienne Jane Kane, was born.

In December 2020, the couple’s first son, Louis Harry Kane, was born. Their second son, Henry Edward Kane, was born on 20 August 2023. The footballer’s fourth child was born after Kane had moved to Germany. At that time, Harry was just starting his first season at Bayern Munich.

Professional career

Harry Kane’s professional career began at Tottenham Hotspur, but before he became the club’s first-choice striker, he had to go out on loan several times.

As a youth, he played for Ridgeway Rovers, spent some time at the Arsenal academy, and joined Tottenham Hotspur in 2004. In January 2011, Kane went out on his first senior loan spell – to Leyton Orient. This was followed by spells at Millwall, Norwich City and Leicester City. The player himself later noted that it was precisely this experience that helped him adapt to senior football and become a stronger player.

Club career

At Tottenham Hotspur, Kane gradually progressed from a young player to the team’s main striker. He scored his first Premier League goal in the 2013/14 season, but it was the following season that saw him really come into his own. In the 2014/15 season, he scored 21 goals and was named PFA Young Player of the Year.

In the 2015/16, 2016/17 and 2020/21 seasons, Kane was the Premier League’s top scorer. In the 2020/21 season, he not only scored 23 goals but also provided 14 assists, becoming the league’s top assist provider. Kane has made 435 competitive appearances for Tottenham Hotspur and scored 280 goals, making him the club’s all-time leading goalscorer.

In 2019, Kane reached the UEFA Champions League final with Tottenham Hotspur. In the final, the English club lost 0–2 to Liverpool. This final was Tottenham’s first ever appearance in Europe’s premier club competition.

In August 2023, Kane joined Bayern Munich. The transfer fee totalled 100 million euros plus 10 million euros in bonuses in the form of transfer fees, and his contract runs until 30 June 2027.

In his first season in Germany, he scored 36 goals in the Bundesliga and won the European Golden Shoe. Kane went on to win the first major club trophy of his career the very next season – Bayern Munich were crowned German champions in 2025.

The 2025/26 season proved particularly prolific for Kane.

For Bayern Munich, he scored 61 goals in 51 competitive matches: 36 in the Bundesliga, 14 in the UEFA Champions League and 10 in the DFB-Pokal.

Bayern Munich won the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal. Kane himself was the Bundesliga’s top scorer for the third consecutive season and won his second European Golden Shoe.

On 18 September 2026, Kane scored two goals in a 7–0 victory over Union Berlin, thereby becoming the fastest player to reach the 100-goal mark in the Bundesliga.

National team

Kane made his debut for England on 27 March 2015 in a match against Lithuania. He came on as a substitute and scored just a few seconds after stepping onto the pitch. Since then, Kane has been the team’s first-choice striker.

He led England onto the pitch as captain for the first time in 2017 and became permanent captain ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Kane’s first major tournament with the national team was UEFA Euro 2016. However, his most memorable international performance came at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Kane scored six goals and won the Golden Boot as the tournament’s top scorer. England reached the semi-finals, where they lost to Croatia, and then lost to Belgium in the third-place play-off.

In 2023, he became the all-time leading goalscorer for the England men’s national team, surpassing Wayne Rooney’s record. In September 2024, Kane made his 100th appearance for the national team, scoring two goals against Finland in that match.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup proved to be another prolific tournament for Kane. He scored six goals, bringing his World Cup tally to 14. Early in the tournament, Kane equalled Gary Lineker’s World Cup goalscoring record, before going on to surpass it. Kane is now England’s all-time leading goalscorer at World Cups.

In the same tournament, England finished third, beating France 6–4 in the third-place play-off. For the national team, this was their best result at a World Cup since their victory in 1966. Kane finished the tournament with six goals.

Following the 2026 World Cup, Kane has 121 caps and 85 goals for England to his name. He remains the team’s captain and its all-time leading goalscorer.

The 2026 Ballon d’Or

In 2026, Harry Kane was named among the 30 nominees for the Ballon d’Or (Golden Ball). His nomination for such a prestigious award is primarily due to his performances during the 2025/26 season: 61 goals for Bayern Munich, two club trophies and 12 goals for England during the season. In total, Kane scored 73 goals in 65 matches for Bayern Munich and the national team.

The ceremony will take place on 26 October 2026 at the London Palladium Theatre in London.
