AccountancyStudents

AccountancyStudents.co.uk was a UK website for people studying towards professional accountancy qualifications. It brought three things together in one place: study material, news from the accountancy profession and a discussion forum where students could talk to each other. Its users usually called it simply AccountancyStudents, or Accountancy Students when written as two words.

This guide describes what the site offered, who it was written for and how it was organised. It draws on contemporary forum discussions from 2008 to 2010 and on the structure of the older version of the site. Because the surviving mentions are that old, the article is written in the past tense and does not claim to describe the site as it may exist today.

What Is AccountancyStudents.co.uk?

The website was aimed at students of several professional accountancy bodies, in particular AAT, ACCA and ICAEW. These are very different organisations: the Association of Accounting Technicians was created in 1980 and is open-access, while ICAEW traces its formation to 11 May 1880 and awards the chartered accountant (ACA) qualification. A single site that served students of all of them was a practical idea, since many people move between these routes during their careers.

Forum discussions give a picture of how the site was seen. In a late-2008 thread on the AAT discussion forums, a contributor called the Accountancy Students website great, while noting that very few ICAEW students used its forums. In June 2010, a contributor who wrote about the forum in the first person plural said it was predominantly ACCA but aimed to "cater for the whole spectrum of qualifications." Taken together, the two comments show a site with a multi-qualification outlook and an audience that leaned towards ACCA students.

An earlier trace confirms how its articles were arranged. In March 2008, a link to a page of the site was shared on the AAT forums in answer to a question from a member who had been approached to prepare limited company accounts, and another member thanked the poster for it. The address of that page sat under a "professional bodies" section with a separate AAT subsection, which indicates that articles were grouped by qualification body.

Who Was the Website For?

AccountancyStudents UK was written for the UK qualification system, and Accountancy Students UK, as a resource, served the people working their way through it. The main groups were:

Accountancy Students UK readers
  • Students of AAT, ACCA and ICAEW looking for material beyond their official course notes.
  • Exam candidates preparing for professional papers and looking for revision advice or other students' experience.
  • Self-study learners who wanted extra material to deepen their knowledge of a topic.
  • Practising accountants and bookkeepers, for whom some articles were useful as practical reference, as the March 2008 example above suggests.

What Topics Did AccountancyStudents.co.uk Cover?

The site's content fell into six main areas, described in turn below.

accountancy students topics

IFRS and IAS Articles

Technical articles on international financial reporting were part of the site's appeal. They included short summaries of IFRS and IAS standards prepared for the site. The two names refer to different generations of the same rulebook: IAS (International Accounting Standards) were the older standards, while IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) are issued by the International Accounting Standards Board. A student revising for a financial reporting paper could use a short summary to refresh the key points of a standard before returning to the full text.

Exam Preparation

The site offered advice on studying, revising and tackling exam-style questions. For students on different qualifications, this kind of material helped in two ways: it explained general techniques that apply to any professional exam, and it gave candidates a place to compare how others approached the same papers.

Free Study Resources

A dedicated Free Study Resources section collected material for self-directed learning. The kinds of resources it pointed to were:

  • study materials and notes;
  • video lectures;
  • links to useful tools and calculators;
  • other material for independent preparation.

News from Professional Bodies

The news section followed developments at the professional bodies, including AAT, ACCA and CIPFA, along with other accountancy organisations. For a student, this kept exam changes, syllabus updates and announcements from their own body in the same place as the study material.

Forum for Students and Accountants

The discussion forum, which sat at a /discussion/ address on the main domain, let members talk about their studies, professional questions and exams. By 2010, students on other platforms were pointing each other to it when asking where to find a good ACCA forum, which shows it had a reputation beyond its own readership. The same thread also records the site's own description of its balance: mostly ACCA students, but open to all qualifications.

Careers and Vacancies

Sections on vacancies for graduates and advice on starting a career in finance and accounting rounded out the site. The main page carried separate blocks for careers and graduate jobs, linking study and the first step into employment.

How Was the Site Organised?

The older version of the site was built around a short menu, which made it quick to find the right section:

Menu section

What it offered

News

Updates from AAT, ACCA, CIPFA and other professional bodies

Articles

Technical and study articles, grouped by professional body

Free Study Resources

Notes, video lectures, links to tools and other self-study material

Forum

Discussion of study, exams and professional questions

Jobs

Vacancies, graduate jobs and early-career advice

Links directory

A catalogue of links to other accountancy resources

This structure helped users in a simple way. A student could start from the article section for their own qualification, check the news for syllabus changes, and finish in the forum to ask a question, without leaving the site.

How Could AccountancyStudents.co.uk Help Readers?

The main advantage of the site was that it combined several kinds of help in one place:

  • study and revision material in the free resources section;
  • technical articles, including summaries of IFRS and IAS;
  • news from the professional bodies;
  • a forum for talking to other students and practising accountants;
  • career information for those finishing their studies.

One caution applies to any summary of accounting standards: they date quickly. For example, IFRS 15 replaced IAS 11 and IAS 18 for periods beginning on or after 1 January 2018, IFRS 16 replaced IAS 17 from 1 January 2019, and IFRS 9 largely replaced IAS 39. Anyone using older standards summaries, whether from this site or elsewhere, should check them against the current editions of IFRS and IAS before relying on them for study or work.

Is the Website Still Working?

The current status of AccountancyStudents.co.uk could not be confirmed. Automated access to the site is disallowed, and no recent independent mentions were found. The most recent references located date from 2010, and the archived pages reviewed show an older version of the site. For that reason this article does not state that the site is running, and it does not state that it has closed. Readers who need to know can open the address directly and check what, if anything, is published there now.
