History of Sale Sharks
The history of Sale Rugby Club began in 1861, when it was originally founded as Sale Football Club. In 1999, the prefix ‘Sharks’ was added.
In its early years, the club rented farmland or played on cricket club grounds until it purchased its own field on Heywood Road.
From 1861 to 1990, the team played amateur rugby, gradually gaining a reputation in the north-west of Great Britain and developing talented players who represented the country on the international stage.
In the 1930s, the team sent players such as Hal Seaver (England), Claude Davey and Wilf Wooler (Wales), and Ken Five (Scotland) to the highest level.
Sale Sharks
In 1994, Sale FC moved from the second division to the top division of English rugby.
The professional era for the Sale Sharks began in 1995. At that time, the team was coached by Jim Mullindert and Philippe St. Andre, who attracted world-class talent. Players such as Jason Robinson, Charlie Hodgson, and Sebastian Chabal shone at the club.
The name ‘Sale Sharks’ has been used since 1999. It symbolises aggression and fast play and is associated with the maritime theme popular among British clubs.
Since 2021, the club has been managed by Alex Sanderson, ‘Sharks’ director. With his arrival, the team began to revive, regularly making it to the Premier League playoffs.
Newcastle Falcons is considered the main rival of Sale Sharks. The confrontations between these teams are called the Northern Derby.
The club is actively working on developing the Sale Sharks Women's team, but its main successes are, of course, associated with the men's team.
