History of Birmingham
Birmingham City
Settlements on the site of modern Birmingham were formed in the 6th–7th centuries. The first mention of this city was found in ‘The Book of the Last Judgment’, dated 1086. It referred to a small and poor estate.
In 1166, Peter de Birmingham was granted a royal charter by Henry II, giving him the right to hold a market every year. This date is considered the founding date of the city.
In the 13th century, Birmingham became famous for its fairs. By the 16th century, it had become a major centre for the production of metal goods, firearms and jewellery. Many goods could be bought cheaply at that time.
During the English Revolution in the 17th century, Birmingham sided with Parliament and supplied its army with weapons, for which it was burned down by royalist troops in 1643. From the second half of the 18th century, the city began to develop rapidly, aided by the Industrial Revolution. In 1830, the Birmingham Political Coalition was formed, which played a key role in the struggle for reform in Parliament in 1832.
In 1838, it was granted municipal bureau status, which gave it the right to its own city government. In 1889, Queen Victoria officially granted Birmingham city status, thereby recognising its exceptional industrial and economic importance.
In 1900, the University of Birmingham opened, becoming the first so-called ‘red brick’ university in England. Between 1940 and 1943, the city was subjected to massive bombing during World War II, which resulted in significant destruction.
Birmingham 1976
In 1976, the National Exhibition Centre began operations, cementing Birmingham's status as a major international centre for exhibitions and conferences. In 2003, a large-scale renovation of the Bullring shopping centre was completed, one of the symbols of the city's modern renewal and architectural revival.
In 2013, the new Birmingham Library opened, becoming an important cultural centre and an impressive architectural landmark. Today, the city continues to develop, attracting numerous tourists.
