Birth and Early Life

Understanding where is Barry Keoghan from is fairly easy, because it’s a matter of public record that he was born in Dublin, Ireland on October 18, 1992. As a young man, Keoghan grew up in Summerhill, one of the most deprived inner-city areas of the Irish capital, and it would have been easy for him to have lost his way before his life ever got started.

It was a tough character to play in an emotionally charged movie, but Keoghan understood the significance of the role and did it justice.

Audiences loved the movie, too. It grossed $527 million worldwide, more than five times as much as it cost to make, and made Keoghan known on an international stage. 

Critical Acclaim Period (2017-2019)

The Rise to Stardom: The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)

As if appearing in Dunkirk wasn’t enough to keep him busy, Keoghan also started working with director Yorgos Lanthimos on 2017’s The Killing of a Sacred Deer. Despite being 24 years old at the time, Keoghan played a teenager in the psychological horror movie, arguably being responsible for the deeply unsettling feeling that permeates the movie and left moviegoers hooked.

Sacred Deer is an important addition to the list of Barry Keoghan movies because it saw him starring opposite screen icons Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman. The movie also won Best Screenplay at Cannes that year, and even today it still has a solid 7.0 rating on IMDb. It’s aged well and is looked back on as one of the most disturbing movies of the genre from the 2010s.

Much of the movie’s success is down to Keoghan’s chilling performance, which is reminiscent of Ezra Miller in 2011’s We Need to Talk About Kevin. It also showed that he could more than hold his own when sharing a screen with Hollywood royalty. He almost stole the show entirely.

2018: The Favourite

The list of Barry Keoghan movies continues with the 2018 release The Favourite, which once again saw Keoghan working alongside Yorgos Lanthimos. In this darkly comedic period drama, Keoghan plays a character called Samuel Masham, and while the role itself wasn’t a particularly major one, it saw him further demonstrate his versatility and his chemistry with other actors.

Set in 18th-century Britain and focussing on the relationships between two aristocratic cousins who are competing to be the “favourite” courtier of Queen Anne, the movie features an ensemble cast including Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz. Unsurprisingly, when you look at the names involved in the project, it went on to win the Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival and a well-deserved Oscar for Colman.

The Oscars and Star Status

2022 and The Banshees of Inisherin

By 2022, Barry Keoghan was collaborating with Martin McDonagh, a fellow Irishman, on The Banshees of Inisherin. This role was in many ways a return to his roots, a proper Irish film with an Irish director and Irish movie stars. 

In it, Keoghan plays Dominic Kearney, a socially awkward loner on a remote island. Kearney is the archetypal Keoghan character, and while it was a supporting role that risked being overshadowed by the chemistry between stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, it was still a vital part which is hard to imagine anyone else doing justice to.

In the end, critics sat up and paid attention, with Keoghan earning an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. In fact, the emotional heart resonated so much with movie fans and critics alike that it picked up nine Oscar nominations in total and firmly established Keoghan as a real player in the movie industry.

2023: Saltburn

Saltburn is perhaps the most unique of all of the Barry Keoghan movies in that it’s so difficult to categorise. Most people would call it a combination of a thriller and a black comedy, but it has elements of a bunch of other genres thrown in for good measure. It’s also notoriously difficult to watch, and not because of Keoghan’s performance. It’s just that some of the scenes are so brutal that you feel like you’re watching someone genuinely experiencing emotional distress.

In the movie, which is directed by the incredibly named Emerald Fennell, Keoghan plays Oliver Quick, a manipulative Oxford student who’s obsessed with a wealthy classmate played by Jacob Elordi. Keoghan’s performance was so gripping that the film went viral shortly after its release, eventually grossing $20 million from a $6 million budget. It also won the BAFTA award for Outstanding British Film, and for the first time in his impressive career, critics couldn’t say that Keoghan had relied on someone else’s star power. In Saltburn, he was the star.

Keoghan’s Personal Life and Impact on Music and Culture

Sabrina Carpenter’s Feather Music Video

Of course, it’s not just movies that Barry Keoghan is known for. To many people, he’s most famous for appearing in the Sabrina Carpenter music video for Please Please Please, which was released in 2024. The music video had a huge impact on pop culture and introduced Keoghan to a new global audience, way beyond the usual film fans.

Keoghan is far from the first actor to appear in a music video, with him following in the footsteps of Courteney Cox in Bruce Springsteen’s Dancing in the Dark and Macaulay Culkin in Michael Jackson’s Black or White. What’s different here is that Keoghan was linked romantically with the pop star, which sent the gossip magazines into overdrive. It was eventually reported that they were in a relationship for a year or so, breaking up in December 2024.

Family Life and Son

In 2022, Keoghan’s only son Brando was born, a child that he shares with his ex-partner Alyson Sandro. According to Keoghan, he doesn’t have a “normal father-son” relationship with his son, but he clearly loves the kid and does his best to give him a better upbringing than he experienced himself in foster care.

In fact, Keoghan has often spoken out in interviews about how his difficult early life in Dublin has informed his approach to playing vulnerable, outsider characters. His personal history is the reason why he’s the actor he is.

Acting Style and What’s Coming Next

As for what’s next, it’s a safe bet that we’re going to keep on seeing more Barry Keoghan movies, and he’ll likely continue to play the same kinds of outsider roles that he’s become known for. His unique acting style allows him to play everyone from sociopathic bad guys to deeply vulnerable protagonists with an unsettling level of realism. His Bow Street Academy training has allowed him to act on instinct, a method which clearly works for him.

Current projects include the Peaky Blinders film The Immortal Man and his role as Ringo Starr in an upcoming series of biographical movies about the lives and careers of the Beatles. Given that Keoghan is still relatively young, we can expect more to come over the next few decades and for him to ultimately build a legacy as one of the many Irish actors who’ve put the Emerald Isle firmly on the map.
