Basic information about the show
At the heart of the British Bake Off programme is a competition between amateur bakers: ordinary people from all over Great Britain complete different baking-related tasks each week, trying to impress the judges. After each episode, one contestant leaves the project, and the three strongest contestants make it to the final, from which the winner of the season is chosen.

History of the show
The show premiered on British television on 17 August 2010 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon in Great Britain. Its popularity grew so much that the programme significantly increased viewers' interest in home baking — shops even noted an increase in sales of ingredients and kitchen utensils.
The idea for the programme came from producer Anna Beattie, who was inspired by traditional British village baking competitions. The format proved so successful that international versions and several spin-offs were later produced.
It is noteworthy that at first, television channels were not eager to take on the project. According to the creators, it took them about four years to convince someone to launch the show. In the end, BBC Two supported the idea, and the first season was released in 2010. A few years later, it was moved to the larger BBC One channel, and the ratings continued to grow. In 2016, Love Productions signed a new contract with Channel 4, and since 2017, new seasons have been released there.
Format
The Great British Bake Off
Each season of The Great British Baking Show usually has 12 contestants — ordinary people who are passionate about baking but are not professional pastry chefs. Each episode is dedicated to a specific theme, such as bread, desserts or biscuits. During the episode, the contestants complete three tasks:
- They bake their signature bake – a dish based on their own recipe, demonstrating their style.
- Technical challenge. The judges give a recipe with minimal clues, and the contestants' task is to replicate it as accurately as possible.
- Showstopper — the final and most difficult challenge of the episode. Contestants are required to prepare a spectacular and complex dish that must impress the judges in terms of both taste and appearance.
After tasting, the judges select the best contestant of the week, and one of the contestants leaves the show. Three bakers remain in the final, from which the winner of the season is chosen.
Where is The Great British Bake Off filmed?
The Great British Bake Off Welford Park in Berkshire
Most seasons of the show are filmed in the famous white marquee set up on the grounds of Welford Park in Berkshire, near the town of Newbury. This location has been used for filming since 2014, and it is where most of the show's episodes take place. The marquee is erected on the estate's lawn only for the duration of filming and is dismantled at the end of the season.
The filming location for GBBO has changed several times:
- 2010 — the first season was filmed in various locations throughout Great Britain.
- 2011 — filming took place at Valentines Mansion in
- 2012–2013 — the location was Harptree Court in
- 2014–2019 — the main location was Welford Park.
- 2020–2021 — filming was temporarily moved to Down Hall in Essex due to pandemic restrictions.
- From 2022 — the show will once again be filmed at Welford Park. It is this green area with a white marquee that has become one of the most recognisable symbols of the show.
Judges
GBBO Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith
Bake Off usually has two judges. They taste the contestants' baked goods, evaluating the taste, appearance and baking technique. It is the judges who choose the Star Baker of the week and decide who will leave the project.
During the show's existence, the composition of the jury has changed only once: in the first seasons, the judges were Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood, and after the programme moved to Channel 4, Prue Leith joined Paul Hollywood.
Season | Judges |
|---|---|
1 - 7 | Mary Berry, Paul Hollywood |
8 - 16 | Paul Hollywood, Prue Leith |
Paul Hollywood is the only judge who has remained on The Great British Bake Off since its first season in 2010. He is a professional baker and is known for his strict, sometimes even harsh, judging style — contestants are particularly nervous when he tastes their baked goods.
GBBO Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood
Mary Berry was a judge from seasons 1 to 7, and it was largely thanks to her that the early episodes of the show became so popular. Her calm manner and vast culinary experience were very popular with viewers. In 2016, she left the project when the show moved from the BBC to Channel 4.
In 2017, starting with the 8th season, Prue Leith joined the programme. Since then, she and Paul Hollywood have been evaluating the contestants' work, bringing their experience and a gentler but still demanding approach to the show.
